For over thirty years one of my most trusted dovetail tools has been my old red marking knife. Taking the best of my old marking knife and adding some improvements, we have created the best knife for transferring tails to your pin board. I think you will find this knife to be your missing link for transferring your tails to the pin board and cutting perfectly mating pins.

The knife body is made of metal and is surprisingly hefty.
Two piece body with space to store a second blade.
The rectangular handle will register in your hand to help you “feel” the blade's position.
Comes with our Making Knife Blade and my Regular Saw Tooth Blade.

Straight Marking Knife Blade:

This straight blade is designed for tracing tails onto the pin-board using traditional marking techniques.
Radius tip “track’s” in the end grain.
Wide at the blade tip for better registration against the tail.

Regular Saw-Tooth Blade:

Designed specifically for use with my dovetail transfer technique.
Made of the same blade material as my regular Dovetail Saw, .024 inch thick kerf.
Regular Saw Tooth Blade has 22 TPI so it fits into the kerf easily.

Allows you to "saw" a starting kerf in the pin-board.

Great little tool. Feels well-balanced in my hand and does the job.

Works great after tune up

Used together with the Rob Cosman dovetail saw the pin layout is clearly marked using the Rob Kossman offset technique. Initially the teeth were binding in the kerf a bit but after I relieved the saw tooth set with a couple strokes on a diamond stone, it worked perfectly.

Perfect fit!

I couldn;t have imagined how much of a difference this marking knife could make. That serrated blade cleanly and easily makes a groove the exact width of the dovetail saw's blade. Easy to get perfect registration in that groove! Smooth cutting, no saw jumping. ALso the handle fits nicely in the hand making it easy to hold and work with. Really great tool.

Learning dovetails

I am learning the art of woodworking and learning from multiple sources. Robs techniques and teaching style is outstanding. His tools are well made and extremely well thought out and designed but at a significant cost I am learning to make do with an indispensable set of tools that I am learning to make work. The marking knife and saw blade are now part of the my critical set of tools. I do realize that quality comes at a cost, but in some cases the cost is too great and practice and experience must suffice. I do highly recommend this marking tool.
