The second most important tool in cutting dovetails is your marking gauge. I tweak the WoodRiver marking gauge to "Cosmanize" it.

We shape and sharpen the blade to cut a crisp base line.
We cut a flat spot on the head to prevent it from rolling off your bench.
We recess the head to protect the blade when not in use.
We flatten the tool face for accurate registration on the wood.
Will accept my mortise gauge attachment.
Comes standard with the 7/16" diameter cutter head.
Extra cutter heads, with and without rods, are available in 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", and 5/8" diameters.

Marking Gauge -Redefined

So, I decided to buy the rebuilt and upgraded marking gauge (fr Lee Valley) that had been “Cosmatized”. The reason was boiled down to the wooden body vs composite body. I’m not as much into composite made things (I know, narrow minded). Since they have been taken by Rob and refined, a wee bit cheaper, and the fact that the body was made of wood made my decision easier vs buying the model completely made by Rob and with his specs. I found that the fit and finish of the re-made Lee Valley one was just what I wanted. It was comfortable, well balanced, very pleasing to the eye, and performed as advertised (which was perfect). I really like Rob, his teaching ability and “classroom” manner, and the fact that all of his products are well thought out and used in his shop. Tools that he sells really are top notch in every regard.
