A Moxon Vise, named after Joseph Moxon (who described the vise in his book titled Mechanick Exercises), is a great vise, and best of all it is easy to build yourself. A Moxon vise is especially useful for cutting dovetails and sawing because it holds the material rock solid, and the middle of the vise is not obstructed by vise hardware. All you need is some 8/4 hardwood for the jaws and our "Cosmanized" hardware kit to make whatever vise size to best suit your needs.

We "Cosmanize" the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit by adding two vise springs, two self-lubricating bushings, two revolving knobs, drilling and tapping a hole in each of the wheels for mounting the revolving knob, and providing a strip of cork-rubber to line the jaw with. These additions take the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit to the next level.

Moxon hardware only (Kit DOES NOT include wooded jaws).

2 x 5 inch hand wheels.

2 x 3/4 inch x 8 inch long acme threaded screws.

4 x Acme threaded nuts with washers.

2 x 3 inch long jaw opening springs (compressed spring length is 3/4 inch).

2 x revolving knobs.

2 x 3/8 inch long bronze self-lubricating bushings.

4 x 24 inch long cork / rubber self-adhesive strip.

Moxon vise

Took me a little longer to build than I thought but it was well worth it. I built it out of 2x6 pine from home Depot. I might rebuild eventually with something nice, but for now this works great.

Great addition to my shop and a fun and enjoyable project project

I love this vise. The Cosmanized hardware is fantastic. The addition of the spinners, bushings and springs makes using this vise a pleasure, and the clamping pressure is rock solid. I built the fences out of 8/4 walnut that was hanging around the shop and I couldn't be happier with it. I fell that I built an heirloom quality tool that will be around for ever.

Great Moxon Vise Kit

The modifications to the Wood River kit make this a great tool. I love the knobs on the hand wheels and the springs are a great idea for opening the vise one handed. The rubberized cork is also a great function adder. A bit pricey but I think it’s worth it to have it all in one kit. I made my vise jaws from ambrosia maple and used design ideas from Popular Woodworking #283.
