The modern combination square was invented in the late 1870s by American inventor Laroy Starrett and is a multi-purpose measuring and marking tool that is virtually indispensable to today's hand tool woodworker. Starrett has been manufacturing precision measuring tools in the U.S. since 1880 and they are simply the highest quality measuring tools available.
Combination squares are the "Jack of all" squares because they can be used for referencing 90° and 45° angles, verifying if a surface is level or an edge is plumb (vertical), and measuring depth or height. Its sliding rule can be used to transfer dimensions without needing to take a measurement and it can be used to mark lines parallel to an edge by setting the head to a certain distance from the end of the rule.
This Starrett 6 inch Combination Square features a reversible knurled locking bolt, a metal scriber, a spirit level, a hardened and easy-to-read photo-engraved steel rule (blade) with a satin chrome finish and 4R graduation scale, and an adjustable cast iron square head with a black wrinkle finish.
