Master craftsman Dale Nish taught me how to make an amazing wood hinge for boxes.  A wooden dowel is cut into segments, a shallow hole is drilled in the center of each dowel and a small pin is inserted into the hole for the dowel segments to pivot on. I've made thousands of boxes using this style of hinge and I have designed four jigs to precisely drill the hole in the center of dowel segments (the most difficult task).

Product Details

  • Four individual wood-hinge drill jig sizes available: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" & 3/4"

  • Each individual wood-hinge drill jig includes one dowel jig, drill bit holder, drill bit, and Allen wrench.

  • 1/4" & 3/8" drill jigs come with a 1/16" drill bit.

  • 1/2" & 3/4" drill jigs come with a 1/8" drill bit.

  • Opposing set screws hold the drill bit securely in the holder and allows for adjustment of the hole depth.

  • Port holes in drill bit holder expel the sawdust to prevent clogging.

    Great product

Works as advertised and puts the hole dead center in the dowel, if the dowel is truly 1/4". Hope the 3/8" unit is back in stock soon.

Drill Jigs – Excellent and neat

These simple devices are brilliant and work great. Tried making the wooden hinges several other ways, with varying success. But short of using a lathe, this is by far the best, most reproducible, and simplest option.

    Works as advertised

I used Rob's 1/4" drill guide on some spalted Silver Maple dowels. This was my first attempt at a wood hinge box. I had to tweak the router table settings several times while testing on some scrap to get the dowel alignment just right, but once I was ready to glue, the hinge fit perfectly, and my wife loves the result.

Looks good. Can't wait to use it. .

I watched Rob's video and waffled between buying the 1/4" jig and making one now on my lathe. I'm glad I bought one. It's well made and was far cheaper than my shop rate efforts would have been. I'll probably get the 3/8" soon.

    Amazing little jig

I bought the 3/8" a few weeks back and after building my first box went straight back and ordered the 1/4" ... great little jigs, really elegant hinge detail on box, so much nicer and neater (and cheaper) than brass hinges.
