One of the keys to successfully making my wood-hinge box is using a hard enough rod for the hinge axle so that it will not deform when you cut it. Our rods are hardened metal that wont deform and come in two diameters: 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch.

The 1/16 inch diameter rods are used with 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch dowels. The 1/8 inch diameter rods are used with 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch dowels.

Our rod kits come in three different configurations:

1/8 inch Rod Kit: 3 x 6 inch segments of 1/8 inch diameter rod
1/16 inch Rod Kit: 6 x 6 inch segments of 1/16 inch diameter rod
Combination Rod Kit: 2 x 6 inch segments of 1/8 inch diameter rod and 4 x 6 inch segments of 1/16 inch diameter rod

worked exactly as should.

The system works perfectly. It takes a little time to get the dowels to the correct size. but after that its all good. The little package of welding rods go far because you only use about 1/2" for each pivot point. They are sized perfectly for the supplied 1/16" drill bit. I even used a dab of wax on the end of each dowel segment for better lubrication.
