A Moxon Vise, named after Joseph Moxon (who described the vise in his book titled Mechanick Exercises), is a great vise, and best of all it is easy to build yourself. A Moxon vise is especially useful for cutting dovetails and sawing because it holds the material rock solid, and the middle of the vise is not obstructed by vise hardware. All you need is some 8/4 hardwood for the jaws and our "Cosmanized" hardware kit to make whatever vise size to best suit your needs.
We "Cosmanize" the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit by adding two vise springs, two self-lubricating bushings, two revolving knobs, drilling and tapping a hole in each of the wheels for mounting the revolving knob, and providing a strip of cork-rubber to line the jaw with. These additions take the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit to the next level.
Well worth the extra money for the upgrades, but pales in comparison to the service. Mr. Cosman himself called me after I order to personally thank me for the business. We had a nice conversation and I could tell he genuinely appreciated it. I’ve never once had that happen. So, whenever I need tools, his site will be my first stop. I've spent the last couple of months putting together a set of woodworking tools, many based on Rob's youtubes. The Moxon vise was a great addition and I think it's finally time to stop making tools and actually build something. So much to learn but Rob makes it fun.
The idea of multiple size wood vise is portable applications is a must.
The moxon kit arrived in great shape and all the parts look good. I have not had time to build the vise so cannot comment on function yet but I expect it all to work beautifully.
I have to admit that this review is based on the contents of the kit and the excellent customer service in fulfilling my order promptly. I received the kit in less than two weeks, pretty incredible for a Christmastime purchase from Canada to Texas. I haven't had time to actually build the vise, but all of the components appear to be top notch. I actually received a call from Rob shortly after placing my order, which was a very pleasant surprise! This was my second purchase from Rob Cosman; the first was a dovetail saw, and it was flawless. I will continue to do business with this company since his Purple Heart Project supports my fellow veterans in life changing ways.
