In 2013 I perfected a process taught by Ernest Joyce for transferring your tail board cuts onto the pin board, resulting in a perfectly placed starter kerf. Without removing the waste, Ernest would place his dovetail saw in the tail board cuts and mark onto the top of the pin board. It was cumbersome and uncomfortable to hold onto the saw by its teeth, and also increased the risk of misaligning the two boards. I decided to develop a saw-tooth blade that would fit into my trusty Dovetail Marking Knife with a kerf that would match my saw perfectly. This results in a more comfortable transfer procedure with greater control and a lower likelihood to misalign the boards in the process.

Be sure to match the Dovetail Marking Knife that best suits the kerf of your dovetail saw: available in .019", .024", and .026". Handles are engraved with the size of the kerf so there's no confusion if you own multiple. Don't forget to pick up a Shawn Shim Dovetail Offset Tool to ensure proper alignment before transferring tails to pins.

  • The knife body is made of cast metal and is surprisingly hefty.

  • Two piece body with space to store a second blade.

  • The rectangular handle will register in your hand to help you “feel” the blade's position.

  • Comes with our .019" (19 Thousandths of an inch) Saw-Tooth Blade.

  • Replacement blades available.

Regular Saw-Tooth Blade:

  • Designed specifically for use with my dovetail transfer technique.

  • Made of the same material as our saw plates, with a .019 inch thick kerf.

  • .019 Saw Tooth Blade has 22 TPI so it fits into the kerf easily.
  • Allows you to "saw" a starting kerf in the pin-board.

I ordered the "thin" knife because that matched the thickness of my saw. What I didn't consider was the offset of the teeth. So...no bueno. Worst yet I got a call from Mr. Cosman himself who pointed out that I'd ordered the thin one. I stupidly didn't pick up on the clue he so graciously laid at my feet. So...will never use the knife. Bummer. The only suggestion I would have it to reiterate in the description that such measurements need to be considered....for newbies like me.

I’ve been too busy working to be able to enjoy the tools. I’ve been purchasing here. I can already tell when I unpack my orders that these are quality. Very solid, and they feel very comfortable to hold. The kerf knife has good weight to it. The one tool I have been able to use is the wood hinge drill kit… game changer.

Bought this along with a 3/4 Shawn Shim and, paired with the Katz-Moses jig and a suizan dozuki saw, set about my very first attempt at a dovetail joint. Made a mistake when I got to the pins-confused left offset with left scoring, so re-started pins and got it right the second time. Plenty of glitches, mostly from sawing technique, but very little gap correction! Happy with first attempt and love the heft of the knife!
