The second most important tool in cutting dovetails is your marking gauge.  The gauge line becomes part of the finished joint.  Here is why my Rob Cosman Marking Gauge will help you cut better dovetails.

Product Details:

  • The cuetter head comes to you sharpened; designed to sever the wood fibers not crush them, leaving a crisp gauge line.
  • The blade is fixed in use but can be rotated to a sharper area when it gets dull.  You can do this several times before having to resharpen.
  • The rod is approximately 7-1/2 inches (190mm) long, creating a useful marking depth of approximately 5 inches (127mm).
  • The head is turned from a solid brass billet and has a large knurled locking knob for easy to tighten.
  • The reference face is approximately 1-3/4 inch (45mm) in diameter, is flattened to within .0005 inch (.01mm) and a flat section is milled into the edge prevent it from rolling.
  • The handle is made from a wood fiber and resin composite, that is strong, impervious to moisture and takes a high polish.
  • The 1/2 inch (13mm) diameter cutter head comes to you already sharpened and ready to use; not dull like most marking gauges on the market today.
  • Extra cutter heads are available in 3/8 inch (9.5mm), 7/16 inch (11mm), and 5/8 inch (16mm) diameters.

Rob Cosman Marking Gauge

I recently received my Cosman marking gauge and couldn’t be happier with it. The build quality is outstanding, with excellent balance and an exceptionally smooth feel in use. The cutter is very sharp, and once the knob is tightened, the gauge locks securely without any rotation—something many other brands struggle with.

I also own a Luban gauge, which is identical to the WoodRiver. While it’s a good tool, it doesn’t compare to the Cosman, which clearly outperforms it. I’ll be purchasing a second Cosman gauge and fitting Rob’s mortise rod to the Luban to dedicate it solely to mortising.

Highly recommended.
