  • Cosman Workbench Vise

The Cosman Workbench Vise is a unique design intended for new workbench builds or as a replacement vise for existing workbenches. It can be easily and quickly installed in either the face-vise or end-vise position on most workbenches. Comes in left-handed and right-handed variants.

Our vise design is inspired by the traditional shoulder vises used by European masters. Made from HSS and mild steel, the vise is built around a 3-inch (76mm) wide by 14-3/4 inch (375mm) long hollow structural steel tube (HSS) that slides through a U-shaped steel housing, while maintaining consistent smooth travel and resisting twist. Unlike most face or end vises, our design eliminates the metal guide bars that can interfere with clamping, providing 12 inches (305mm) of open space in which to secure your workpiece.

Racking is virtually eliminated by the four 10-inch (250mm) “jacking strips”, one on each side of the way tube and two along the bottom. The jacking strips are made from steel and PE plastic (UHMW) allowing the powder-coated HSS tube to slide easily. Each jacking strip can be individually adjusted using set screws and jamb nuts. Once properly adjusted, the strips virtually eliminate racking.

A single 3/4-inch (19mm) x 5-TPI (teeth per inch), 7-inch (175 mm) long steel Acme-threaded rod passes through the way tube and engages an Acme-threaded nut welded to the center of the housing. The front of the threaded rod attaches to a T-shaped handle fixture at the front of the vise. This screw mechanism provides 5-inches (100mm) of overall travel, less the thickness of your wooden jaw. A hard maple handle, 1-inch (25mm) thick and 11-inches (280mm) long, provides controlled clamping without over-clamping, making the vise well suited to precision bench work.

Straightforward to install in a new build or retrofitted onto an existing workbench, the vise requires an unobstructed flat mounting area on the underside of the benchtop at least 13-inches (330mm) deep by 7-inches (175mm) wide, as well as a minimum benchtop thickness of 2-inches (50mm). It mounts to the underside of the benchtop using six lag bolts (included).
